How can health systems remain resilient in conflict-affected settings?

“There is no peace without health, and there is no health without peace. That's how we frame health in conflict settings,” says Elhadj As Sy, Co-Chair of the WHS Council.

For him, resilience starts with a basic prerequisite: respect for international humanitarian law. Health facilities and health workers must be protected. Yet in conflicts around the world, they are increasingly under attack. Without addressing this reality, resilient health systems will remain out of reach.

Conflict and health will be one of six central topics at the World Health Summit 2026.
