The first episode in a new series, PC Stories
Featuring my 5-year old Ryzen 1700X Dell tower.
The idea of this series is simple.
Here’s a PC and here’s the life it has lived.
I feel strongly that there are many excellent channels on YouTube
that focus on performance numbers already. While this is important and often fascinating, I feel the essence of this channel has always been sit right at the intersection of under-appreciated technology and nostalgic story-telling.
So here’s the first in hopefully a long series of stories about PC’s and their owners. What better subject to start with than one of my loyal workhorse’s for the last 5 years - “The Ryzen Dell”.
As the video explains, I actually bought this PC in a rush to finish university projects. However it became an invaluable tool as my design degree began to demand more and more product render images generated from the highly-demanding “KeyShot” application. I’ve used it to edit many of the videos you’ve seen on this channel from 2015-2019. I haven't done many big upgrades, just minor things. I added a few Noctua fans to replace the OEM ones, added a few extra drives for storage. Perhaps the biggest upgrade was when I put 32GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM in there just for the video editing. This became necessary when a timeline full of 4K footage was pushing the 8GB that the machine came with. It’s done lots of CAD modelling in SolidWorks, plenty of Adobe Illustrator and of course it’s fair share of gaming.
It’s been a loyal, reliable and hard-working PC. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get around to making a video about it.
In time I’d love to interview some of you GHG viewers and hear about your PC’s. I’d love to share the stories of how you used your PC’s or what they mean to you on the channel. Wouldn’t that be a great thing. To give all these unappreciated PC’s some time in the spotlight.
Really that’s the essence of this channel isn’t it, showing a little appreciation to underapperciated tech.
