Beruhigung
Alle meine Schmerzen
sind in diesem Herzen
wie in einer Wiegen
sanfte Kinder liegen
die im Traum
in Himmelsvaters Armen sind.
Und du selber Gute
bist in minem Blute
Otto Julius Bierbaum
Helle Nacht
Weich küsst die Zweige
der weisse Mond.
Ein Flüstern wohnt
im Laub, als neige,
als schweige sich der Hain zur Ruh:
Geliebte du --
Der Weiher ruht, und
die Weide schimmert.
Ihr Schatten flimmert
in feiner Flut, und
der Wind weint in den Bäumer:
wir trämen -- träumen --
Die Weiten lecuchten
Beruhigung.
Die Niederung
hebt bleich den feuchten
Schleier hin zum Himmelssaum:
o hin -- on Traum --
Richard Dehmel
Verkündigung
Du tatest mir die Tür auf,
ernestes Kind.
Ich sah mich um
in deinem kleinen Himmel,
lächelnde Jungfrau.
Du wirst einst
einen großen Himmel hüten,
Mutter mit dem Kind.
Ich tu die Tür
mit ernstem Lächeln zu.
Richard Dehmel
Nachglanz
Einst geliebte Selle,
immer noch empfundne,
sternklar weist die Nacht
wir Weiten,
die auch dich umschließen,
du entschwundne.
Gütig glänzen wieder
alle Lichter oben,
die uns je zu gleicher Andacht
von der trüben Erde
auferhoben.
Einsamkeit und Dunkel
sind nun nicht mehr Qualen.
Dankbar betet Seel in Selle:
Sterne, all ihr Sterne,
helft uns strahlen!
Richard Dehmel
Herz, mein Herz
Herz, mein Herz, sei nicht beklommen,
Und ertrage dein Geschick;
Neuer Frühling gibt zurück,
Was der Winter dir genommen.
Und wie viel ist dir geblieben!
Und wie schön ist noch die Welt!
Und, mein Herz, was dir gefällt,
Alles, alles darfst du lieben!

![René Koering, Symphony No. 3 Jonas - Orchestre National de Montpelier
![Arnold Schoenberg, Herzgewächse, Op. 20 [Lucy Shelton, Da Capo Chamber Players, Oliver Knussen]
Herzgewächse was similar to Erwartung in that it is not musically organized by a strict development of an evident theme. It experiments with instrumental color and range, But perhaps most interesting about Herzgewächse, particularly in connection with Pierrot Lunaire, is the relationship of music to text, a relationship made even more evident by the fact that Schoenberg was beginning the text for what would become the unfinished project Die Jakobsleiter. Schoenberg was beginning to explore more deeply the possibilities of expressing in a mixture of language and music the theological and philosophical. He began to search for a link between music and words that would relinquish a dependency on visual props or the creation of mental pictures. But in Herzgewächse and to a lesser extent Pierrot Lunaire, the notion of the poetic still reigned as the dominant connecting link between music and language. Herzgewächse was not performed immediately after its composition, but only in 1927-1928, partly due to the unusual ensemble employed and the demands made on the vocalist. In the article The Relationship to the Text, Schoenberg argued, following Schopenhauer, that music, because of its power and character, must never attempt to illustrate text or depict that which texts represent linguistically. Rather, as in the case of a Schubert song or Schoenbergs own songs, Op. 2 and 3, the direct contact with the sound of the first words out to be sufficient to permit the development of a musical statement by the composer without any reference to the literal meaning or poetical context of the poetry being set. The sounds of words rather than the mental pictures they generated, or their grammatical or sense content, triggered a so-called direct comparison. The real essence of the poems no the illustration of content was unlocked by music, and essence unreachable and imperceptible without the aid of music. As Schoenberg concluded, music and text relate to each other that is to sy they complement each other on an extremely high, spiritual level, evident only in retrospect as a result of the integration of the two media at the hands of the composer. But in the ordinary sense, in terms of declamation or tempo or loudness, or in terms of narrative description, music and text had to diverge if, in fact, music was to retain its autonomy and power and if the higher realm of connectedness of music and language was to be achieved. In this tantalizing but somewhat inconsistent theoretical exposition, Schoenberg embraced an idea that language needs to be purified if it is to be, as Kraus suggested, the mother of ideas in the arts. If language performs its ethical imperative to speak its truths in the broadest sense a spiritual unity that can be revealed by art and music will emerge. However, the kind of ordinary language we hear in daily life or read in newspapers as an insufficient model. What the painter and the composer must do is to take off from language and generate works in whose expression and through whose perception a higher realm of human experience is created and revealed. Language as a given text provides a hint of the aesthetic idea. That hint is often hidden from the view of the composer who approaches the text in the ordinary way. It is in this framework that would should listen to the connection between the Maeterlinck poem and the music of Herzgewächse, particularly where the poet describes moods and the evolution of sentiment (e.g., sinking to rest, listless melancholy). It is neither the metaphoric nor the literal leaning of Maeterlincks poem that connects to the music or justifies its presence. The text has been transformed and has become an integral telement of the musical discourse. ![Aribert Reimann, Engführung für Tenor und Klavier
Following the linguistic model of [Paul Celans] poem, I have divided the musical form into nine sections with each section connected to the next one by a sequence of six notes in the vocal part. At the second entry of the hosanna in the eighth section this refrain is processed by the piano into a fugue with contrapuntal subordinate voices of the first piano entry which also recur in counter motif several times in the piece with final Engführung of the refrain theme. Not only by this strict form, but also by forms such as agglomerations and the piling of tone groups one upon the other I have attempted to investigate the concept and situation of Engführung in all its mental and atmospheric interpretations.
This opus was composed in November of 1967
Aribert Reimann
After studying composition, counterpoint and piano (under, among others, Boris Blacher) at the Berlin University of the Arts, Reimann took a job as a repetiteur at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. His first appearances as a pianist and accompanist were towards the end of the 1960s. In the early 1970s, he became a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, and held a professorship in contemporary song at Berlins Hochschule der Künste from 1983 to 1998.
Reimanns reputation as a composer has increased greatly with several great literary operas, including Lear and Das Schloss (The Castle). Besides these, he has written chamber music, orchestral works and songs. He has been honoured repeatedly, including the Großen Verdienstkreuz mit Stern der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Great German Cross of Merit, with Star) and the Verdienstorden des Landes Berlin (Berlin Order of Merit).
Invited by Walter Fink, he was the seventh composer featured in the annual Komponistenporträt of the Rheingau Musik Festival in 1997, in songs and chamber music with the Auryn Quartet, playing the piano himself.
His commissioned work, Cantus for Clarinet and Orchestra, dedicated to the clarinetist and composer Jörg Widmann, was premiered on January 13, 2006, in the WDRs Large Broadcasting Hall in Cologne, Germany, in the presence of the composer, who claims the work was inspired by Claude Debussys compositions for clarinet.
His opera Medea after Franz Grillparzer was premiered at the Vienna State Opera in 2010, conducted by Michael Boder, with Marlis Petersen in the title role.
In 2011 he was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize für sein Lebenswerk (for his lifes work). Aribert Reimann, Engführung für Tenor und Klavier](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/T3vni7Qv1mQ/mqdefault.jpg)
