Elyse Myers made a beautiful, vulnerable post of her learning she’s a NYT Bestselling author. She was confused and emotional, and kept asking for clarity, and asking for clarity, and asking for clarity. Those informing her of the news were patient and kind. And it clearly demonstrated - this is how all Autistic people should be treated—always.
We’re not.
Imagine this same scenario playing out with a boss, a collaborator, a police officer, a teacher, anyone in society - not to find out good news but simply an autistic person trying to understand.
This is not the patience and acceptance we’re met with.
My autistic traits are often not very apparent on the surface. Yet I constantly find myself asking for clarity, pointing out breakdowns in communication and seeking solutions, and asking clarity again. This need for clarity, this pattern of often becoming confused by what other people seem to understand has caused untold issues in my life. My requests for clarity are interpreted as judgement and attack.
Autistic people should be treated with patience. Our requests for clear, direct communication and clarity on what we don’t understand should not trigger defensiveness, pasive-agressiveness, or judgment.
Just be clear.
