I've been sitting on this arrangement for 15 months! Delighted to finally be able to release it into the wild as a part of two new and exciting Windows MIDI demo song arrangement albums, on which me & friendos collaborated via STAFFCIRC, and released just in time for the 20th anniversary of Windows 2000! I decided to arrange the very notorious PASSPORT.MID demo song that was included with various early-days Microsoft Windows operating systems, beginning with Win 3.0. PASSPORT.MID may well have been the very first MIDI sequence I heard upon my family acquiring a Windows 98 computer in 1999, and was instrumental in galvanising a passion in General MIDI, sequencing and desktop music as a whole, so I arranged this tribute to it! With this arrangement I didn't want to take the song in a completely different direction, instead choosing to retain its essential vibe and build upon it whilst also leaning maybe more towards the acid/soul jazz of the 1990s. As may be obvious, I used a beloved circa 1997 YAMAHA MU100 XG sound module with a PLG100DX (DX7!) daughterboard expansion for all of the sound generation, and employed some very modest post-production on the master to get it pumped up for the modern era.
The albums feature many long-time collaborators and friends such as Tony Thai, coda, Chimeratio, aivi & surasshu, Zackery Wilson, kulor, FearofDark and numerous others. They are available to download free on Bandcamp:
