It is never too soon to start getting ready to welcome a new resident in our sanctuaries... Especially when our caretakers are developing the most inventive ways to create from scratch all the enrichment our rescued bears can dream of. 🔨Who knew fire hoses and tyres could be recycled into swings for bears?!
In our ‘Get Ready With Us’ series, we give you a behind-the-scenes look and the dedicated team of animal keepers shows you everything that is being built, organized, and prepared for the young bear. 🛠️ 🪛 🧹
⚠️ But right now, Flora is still in Albania, longing for a safe home. She does not have access to any kind of distraction from her dreary living conditions, let alone to a comfortable area to properly rest. We can't wait to welcome her in our bear sanctuary, where she will finally get to enjoy endless hours of climbing, playing, rolling, sniffing, digging, foraging, sleeping... of simply being a bear.🍃

Deux mois après son sauvetage, Mero fête son premier anniversaire ! 🎂🦁 Encore récemment détenu comme animal de compagnie en République tchèque, il découvre aujourd’hui la vraie vie de lion, entouré de soins, d’attention et de respect. 💛 Jour après jour, il reprend confiance, apprend à jouer, à rugir, à être simplement lui-même. Un anniversaire symbolique pour un lionceau qui a enfin trouvé sa place et commence une nouvelle vie.

🔍 Undercover investigation in Romanian public shelters unveils gruesome conditions 🇷🇴
🐶 Dogs eating faeces. 🪣 Water bowls frozen while animals are exposed to sub-zero temperatures. ❄️ Dogs suffering from untreated wounds. These are just some of the findings in public shelters in Romania from an undercover investigation that was commissioned by FOUR PAWS.
In January, as part of a nationwide investigation we visited nine public shelters across the country. What we found was nothing short of alarming and deeply unsettling. 🛑 Some of the shelters did not meet even the most basic standards of animal welfare.
What the investigators witnessed was horrifying: it seems common for dogs to attack each other out of desperation, sometimes even killing one another. Tragically, these are not the only casualties—many more dogs die due to neglect. To illustrate this with a particularly shocking statistic: the Brăila City shelter had a death rate of 40% in 2024. ❌ Nearly every second dog that arrived there did not make it out alive.
We could go on with countless tragic details from the investigations: dogs that were severely underweight, deprived of food and even access to water was limited as buckets were either frozen or empty. 🥣 We encountered a dog that had bitten off parts of his own tail, out of pure distress. And all this extreme animal neglect is funded by the tax-payers, as the government allocates millions of euros in these facilities. 💰
Romania’s current animal welfare laws and shelter system are failing both the animals and the citizens who fund them. Mass-sheltering and killing must stop! We are calling on the Romanian government to implement a comprehensive, humane nationwide CNVR (Catch–Neuter–Vaccinate–Return) programme to put an end to this suffering.

✨ The big moment we’ve been working towards - step by step! ✨
Join us as we take a closer look at the huge day for Flora, Gordo and Florencia at the former Zoo Luján. Rescues like these are incredibly complex: from first access to the site, to veterinary checks, meticulous preparation, and the coordinated effort required to safely move the animals. It’s never quick, and it’s never simple - every step demands patience, precision, and constant adaptation. But we love what we do. And we do it for the animals. 💛
🐻 Gordo and Florencia had been kept in inadequate conditions for years. When our team assessed them last autumn, they were immediately classed as urgent cases. We needed to get them out, safely, responsibly, and with as little stress as possible, so they could finally begin a new chapter at our BEAR SANCTUARY Belitsa in Bulgaria.
🐅 Flora’s rescue was just as time‑sensitive. After living in immense pain for months before our assessment, it was clear she would need expert veterinary treatment, a tailored rehabilitation plan, species‑appropriate nutrition, dedicated support - and a lot of stability. Thankfully, FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands is exactly the place for that.
Rescues like these rely on true teamwork: across our rescue team, vets, caretakers, colleagues worldwide, and stakeholders on the ground. And they’re only possible because of the support behind them! 🤝
