In this Park Tool CT-5 Mini Chain Tool Review, I show you how to use a bike chain breaker to replace a link on your bicycle chain. I used the Park Tool chain breaker to break the chain, and I replaced the link with a SRAM PowerLink. You can find a link to that above.
The reason we used this chain breaker tool is because the derailleur on the bike had to be replaced, and you can't completely detach that without breaking the chain.
If you're planning on using the Park Tool chain breaker to remove a link from your bicycle chain, be sure to follow my instructions in this video carefully so that you remove the right segment of the chain. If you don't, you'll find you'll have to shorten the chain by 2 additional links to use a replacement link, and then the chain might not be long enough and need to be replaced.
If you're wondering, "What chain tool should I buy?" I can say I'm perfectly happy with the Park Tool CT-5. I did the job of breaking my chain perfectly, and it's small enough and light enough to carry with you when you're out biking.
