In this 27.5 inch by 2.0 to 2.4 inch Slime Extra Strong Self-Sealing Bike Tubes Review, I share how long these tubes are effective against flats and give you a few tips regarding using these tubes.
These tubes have Schrader valves, but you can get them with Presta valves as well.
This review is an update, because I've been using Slime self-sealing tubes for awhile, and I still haven't had to fix a single flat tire on any of the tubes I've had with Slime in them.
That being said, the bike in this video has had another brand of tube sealant in the tubes, and I've never had to fix a flat on it until now. Ironically, both of my tires went flat the other day, and I added air to them twice, and they went flat again pretty quickly, so the life of the tube sealant must be done.
I've been riding this bike for about a year and 5 months now, so I'd say the sealant did a pretty good job lasting as long as it did.
To give some perspective, I've pulled goatheads out of the tires and had to add a little air a few times, but the tubes have held the air and sealed the tires up to this point.
That brings me back to the Slime self-sealing tubes I replaced the old tubes with in this video. Slime's information about their self-sealing bicycle tubes says their tubes will stop flats for 2 years. So that would be better than the sealant that's been in this bike's tubes, if it's true.
I can imagine these slime tubes can last up to 2 years because I haven't had a self-sealing tube with Slime in it fail yet. I was curious about the experience other people have had with self-sealing tubes, so I looked into it, and here's what I found.
Different conditions can affect how long the sealant is effective against flats. The more punctures you've had, the more seals created by the slime, and the quicker the sealant gets used up.
Sealants are not effective against large punctures. Slime claims their sealant works on punctures up to 3 mm.
Generally, people say the sealant can be effective for 6 months to 2 years.
I've seen mixed reviews on Slime, but from my personal experience, riding a bike where I live would be too much of a hassle without it. There was a time when it seemed like I was constantly patching tubes, and those patches weren't always effective. It was time-consuming, and I generally ended up replacing tubes often.
Since I've been using self-sealing tubes, I rarely have to think about buying a new tube.
Tips.
Before replacing your tube with a slime self-sealing tube, make sure you remove any thorns or other sharp objects that may still be in the tire you're going to replace the tube of.
Put a little air into your self-sealing tube to give it some shape before you put it inside your bike tire. That will help you to keep the tube from twisting and being misaligned inside the tire.
Check your air pressure after you've added air to make sure it's what's recommended for your bike tires.
Pump your tires up after rotating the tires so your valve stem is facing down. Although I've never had an issue with Slime coming out of the valve, some people claim they have, and this might be a good solution to prevent that.
If you do get a flat with a self-sealing tube, add air a couple of times and try riding it around before you dispose of the tube.
Don't bother trying to repair a flat with a patch kit on a self-sealing tube. I haven't tried that, but a lot of people have and reported that it was messy because of the tube sealant in the tube and ineffective at repairing a puncture. Just get a new tube if your self-sealing tube is no longer working.
My experience with Slime self-sealing tubes has been great, and I can't imagine riding bikes in the area I live without them.
