U.S. Navy sailor Joshua Aviles has spent more than nine months aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, including during its deployment connected to the Iran war. While he was still serving overseas, he learned that his father, Luis Manuel Aviles, had been taken into immigration custody in Key West, Florida.
Joshua says his father has lived in the United States for roughly 20 years, had a driver’s license, Social Security card and work permit, and was waiting for his green card application to be approved. DHS says Luis entered the country illegally and is being held pending removal proceedings, adding that having a family member in the military is “not a free pass” to violate immigration law.
But Joshua’s family is far from alone. An Associated Press investigation cited in the episode found that more than 50 parents and spouses of active-duty service members have been detained since Trump returned to office, with at least six deported and eight still in custody at the time of its review.
