The Paper Trail Memorial Map is compiled by Ciarán MacAirt.
It commemorates the massive number of lives lost during the terrible 'Troubles', conflict that raged across Ireland Britain and even Europe from 1966 onwards.
Behind every entry is a human life – a parent, a child, a partner, a friend, a neighbour – and grieving loved ones left behind!
Paper Trail's Memorial Map connects the loss of each life to a location, and each place represents a home, a road, a parish, a town and a community impacted by violence. It helps us visualize how the so-called Troubles have damaged tens of thousands of lives across time and space.
Paper Trail's Memorial Map also stands as a stark, visual warning that we cannot be complacent about peace either, as lives continue to be lost long after the signing of the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement in 1998. These latest victims include our talented pal, Lyra McKee, killed in Fanad Drive, Creggan, Derry, on 18th April, 2019.
Paper Trail commemorates each victim similarly: a name, an age, a date, and location of the death/mortal wounding. We include no title, rank, or status.
This is a commemorative work-in-progress: over the next year, Paper Trail will continue to locate, verify, and amend records manually for anniversaries. Families and friends of each victim can also contact us directly above if you wish us to amend an entry for your loved one.
