Whistleblowers are the backbone of transparency and accountability – democracy can’t function without them, nor good journalism, nor anti-corruption efforts. And yet, Australian whistleblower protection laws are woefully inadequate.
Instead of being applauded for speaking out against wrongdoing, everyday people face criminal charges, mountains of legal debt, and often blacklisting in their profession.
Australian whistleblowing laws are broken. The only way to fix our broken laws is to put whistleblower protections front and centre in the political debate. The Australian Government needs to reform laws and include stronger protections for whistleblowers who uncover corruption.
