wocomoTRAVEL | Paestum and Velia - Nothing Ceases to Be, Italy | Treasures of the World @wocomoTRAVEL | Uploaded September 2024 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
The Temple of Neptune in Paestum is considered by some to be the most significant monument on Italian soil - yet it is not actually Italian, nor is it Roman, but Greek.
Because ancient Greece extended far beyond the Aegean Sea, and some of the most important Greek cities were located in Southern Italy. Among them is Paestum, founded around 500 BC. Its three large temples have remained in impressive ruins - rediscovered in the 18th century, they quickly became an essential part of every Italian educational journey. Here, Europe learned what a temple is - the influence of Paestum on European style and form perception can hardly be overstated.
Just 50 kilometers south of Paestum lies Velia/Elea, another Greek city. Here, not a single temple remains standing; apart from a mighty city gate, everything built by the Greeks and later by the Romans has been destroyed. Nevertheless, there is a charm emanating from the ruins of Elea. Philosophers throughout the centuries did not know where Elea was, but they knew what Elea was: the place where the philosophical school of the Eleatics was located.
