wocomoTRAVEL | Freediving world record-holder Herbert Nitsch pushes the limits of the human body @wocomoTRAVEL | Uploaded September 2023 | Updated October 2024, 17 hours ago.
The Austrian freediver, Herbert Nitsch, defies the depths of the ocean and goes from one amazing feat to another. He has held the world record for freediving since 2007: - 214 meters! The British director Alexander Abela, who is also a freediver, shadowed him for many months while he trained, and also during international competitions in Greece and the Bahamas. In order to reach these extreme depths, Herbert draws on the breathing techniques of marine mammals and forces himself to do hours of training every day. At one with the sub-aquatic world, he is looking to go beyond Man’s limits rather than just break records. His dream is to go deeper than 300 meters!

Meeting Herbert Nitsch is not only an incredible adventure, it's also a scientific one. This holder of 33 world records is constantly pushing back the limits of the human body. At the Rhodes Championship, a pallet of divers from beginners to top-level professionals come to challenge each other in the guise of ancient divers. Herbert comes to beat the record for free diving at -100 meters. This event consists of freediving without fins, using a cable and arms to reach the greatest depth.
Freediving is first and foremost an experience of the silence of the ocean depths, but also of solitude. The human being is alone in the face of the immense, dizzying depths of the ocean floor and his or her own abilities. Because here, diving to such depths means mastering your body and pushing your own limits. The human body adapts to the marine environment, adopting the reflexes of marine mammals such as dolphins. The technique used by Herbert Nitsch is called the immersion reflex.
