Sonnox Oxford Drum Gate 2 builds on the original drum-detection gate with three additions that change how it handles a multi-mic kit. Phase and time alignment, adaptive decay and per-hit clipping. Here is how they work on real drums.
The original Drum Gate earned its place by classifying hits by drum type rather than level, so a loud hi-hat would not retrigger the snare gate. Version 2 keeps all of that and adds three things worth your attention. The new Align tab corrects time, polarity, and phase across your drum tracks from inside the plugin, automatically grouping tracks and eliminating the need for a separate alignment tool. Adaptive Resonant Decay separates the resonant tail of each hit from the surrounding spill while leaving transients untouched, so the gate sounds natural rather than mechanical. And Hit Clip keeps every hit consistently sitting in a dense mix without flattening the performance's dynamics.
There is more under the hood: improved hit classification, a dedicated All Transients mode, external audio and MIDI sidechain triggering and a cleaner interface.
