Ashwini Bhat, Kashmiri Pandit, welcomes the reopening of decades-old cases but argues that selective reinvestigations alone will not give the community a sense of closure or justice. He insists that unless the government sets up a truth and reconciliation commission with a full judicial mandate, covering every killing, slaughter, and incident of genocide from 1988 onwards, the community will continue to view these efforts with suspicion, doubting whether the government is genuinely serious. He also expresses frustration that the Supreme Court cited the passage of time as a reason for inaction, only for 1984 riot cases to be reopened within a week, which deepens the community's feeling that their genocide is uniquely being measured by the yardstick of elapsed time. He says the community feels like a "forgotten lot", not because they were nonviolent, or lacked the vote bank that matters, or failed to take the law into their own hands, but precisely because of those reasons, the state appears to be telling them that their patience and law-abiding nature count for nothing
