Hot Rods have developed with ingenuity, beauty and performance, and according to this film, they had a tough time gaining respectability at the start of this popular motorsport. This film traces hot rod history including racing at Dry Lakes and Bonneville Salt Flats in Tooele County, Utah.

As a way to communicate with hot rodders nationwide in the U.S. Hot Rod magazine began in 1948 in Hollywood, California.
In 1951, Hot Rod magazine editor and hot rodder himself, Wally Parks, saw the need for a governing body to organize and promote the sport in order to change the public perception. Hot rodders were often portrayed in the media as troublemakers, and the number of accidents and fatalities didn't help their public relations. So Parks established the The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) with the goal of promoting safety, sportsmanship, and fair competition in drag racing.

The NHRA produced films showcasing the automotive innovations of hot rods and roadsters, as well as taking a comprehensive look at the sport of drag racing. These films included: Ingenuity in Action (1959), Hot Rods and Drag Racing (1965), and Drag Racing USA (1967), and were applauded for their informative content and exciting footage. In addition to films, the NHRA also produced other educational materials to promote the sport including books, magazines, pamphlets, posters, and other hot rodding and drag racing videos. These videos, which are even more popular today, highlighted and showcased the skill, engineering, and sportsmanship of the drivers participating.
