In this virtual lecture, Professor Burridge will consider some of the shifts and mutations of English language history, and it does so through the lens of ‘resilience’. While it might be one of the most irritating buzzwords of recent turbulent times, resilience beautifully captures the inbuilt self-regulating devices that enable languages to bounce back from disturbances. As Barbara Strang’s research shows, English ‘pivots like a pro’.
Biography
Kate Burridge is Professor of Linguistics at Monash, and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia. Her research interests include the structure and history of English, taboo and euphemism, popular attitudes to language and the ins and outs of language change. Kate has authored / edited around 25 books on different aspects of language. She is also a regular presenter of language segments on radio and TV.
