We officially finished hauling out 20,000–25,000 sacks of potatoes from this cellar… and if we sold them right now, we’d only get 60¢ per 100 pounds. That would mean losing nearly half a million dollars.
So instead, we’re dumping our uncontracted potatoes and trying to hold the rest in storage, hoping the market comes back up. Today we’re checking all of our potato cellars to make sure the temperature, moisture, and ventilation systems are working properly. If we’re going to gamble on holding 60,000 more sacks until summer, they have to stay in perfect condition.
I also explain why we can’t just use these potatoes for seed (Gen 3 vs Gen 4 certified seed), and we spend the afternoon in the shop getting our potato planter ready for spring — replacing drag bars, fixing the John Blue fertilizer pump, checking discs, bearings, and more.
Farming isn’t just planting and harvesting. It’s storage management, market timing, equipment repairs, and sometimes making hard financial decisions.
