From the perspective of the individual who loves, how is unrequited love any different from reciprocated love? If you are not constantly second-guessing the feelings of the other person, how could you possibly know whether you are loved? Is there any direct way to experience being loved?

Why do people focus on social relationships to the exclusion of the individuals who are involved? What is it about social ties that make them seem more primary than the minds of the persons without whom the ties could not exist? Could there really be a society without individuals? A requited love without someone daring to love first -- alone, without any promise of reciprocation? Could there be a Church without believers? A god without a single worshiper?

How does any of this really work?
