Mary Lou Retton
U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Gold Medalist
Mary Lou Retton catapulted to international fame by winning the All-Around Gold Medal in womens gymnastics at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, becoming the first American woman to win a gold medal in the challenging all around event that includes Uneven Bars, Vault, Floor Exercise and the Balance Beam. She also won silver medals for Team and Vault, and bronze medals for Uneven Bars and Floor Exercise. Her five medals were the most won by any athlete at the 1984 Olympics. After her performance, a national sports survey found Mary Lou to be the most popular athlete in America.
Today she continues to touch the lives of millions. She travels the world as a Fitness Ambassador and childrens advocate promoting the benefits of proper nutrition and regular exercise. Mary Lou serves as national chairperson and sits on the Board of Governors of the Childrens Miracle Network. She has been an Olympic commentator and on-air person at the 88 and 96 Olympics, with numerous guest appearances on television shows. Mary Lou has been married since 1990 and is the mother of four daughters ranging in age from 6 to 13.
LUNCHEON BENEFICIARY:
The Dallas School Project
In order to continue the momentum that was started with the 2008 inaugural luncheon revenues and to impact real behavioral change in the childhood overweight and obesity epidemic in our community, the FITNESSGRAM Dallas project will help implement the proven software fitness assessment and activity-tracking tool in up to 44 DISD and underserved private schools in Dallas. Over a multi-year period, we will gather and analyze the fitness data, and work closely with the students, parents, schools and communities, not only with fitness but on elevating the levels of childrens physical activity at school, at home and within the neighborhood communities.
This program seeks to 1) examine the impact of increases in physical activity on academics, absenteeism and discipline; 2) train school personnel in tracking and promoting physical activity through FITNESSGRAM/ACTIVITYGRAM; 3) help school personnel to work with students, parents, their school and the community in promoting healthy lifestyle changes; and 4) construct a best practices model from this study that will ultimately be disseminated to all Texas public schools.
