Kings and Generals began remaking its animated historical documentary on the history of the Ottoman empire. The first season covered the Rise of the Ottoman Empire from the humble beginnings as a small Turkic Beylik to the Fall of Constantinople 1453 covering all the major battles (youtu.be/TDLmsiqhgns), while the second season covered the reign of Mehmed II (youtu.be/spikLEMFZTo). The third season will start with the death of Mehmed II “the Conqueror” igniting a ruthless Ottoman succession crisis between his sons: the experienced, pious Bayezid and the younger, brilliant Cem Sultan. This episode opens Season 3 of our Ottoman history series by exploring how Ottoman tradition made every prince a legitimate claimant—and how Mehmed’s codification of state-sanctioned fratricide planted the seeds of future conflict. We trace Bayezid’s long apprenticeship in Amasya, his ties to scholars and the military elite, and the court tensions that surrounded his suitability as heir. Then we shift to Cem’s rise in Anatolia, his support among local notables, and the factional struggle in Constantinople where secrecy, intrigue, and Janissary power decide the empire’s fate before either brother arrives. The story escalates into open civil war: Cem strikes coins, seizes Bursa, and attempts a negotiated partition—only to be defeated by Bayezid’s disciplined forces. Fleeing into exile, Cem becomes a political bargaining chip in the hands of the Mamluks and the Knights of Rhodes, while Christian powers exploit Ottoman instability from Italy to the Adriatic.
