Kings and Generals began remaking its animated historical documentary on the history of the Ottoman empire. The first season covered the Rise of the Ottoman Empire from the humble beginnings as a small Turkic Beylik to the Fall of Constantinople 1453 covering all the major battles (youtu.be/TDLmsiqhgns), while the second season covered the reign of Mehmed II (youtu.be/spikLEMFZTo). In 1516, Sultan Selim the Grim turned south after crushing the Safavids at Chaldiran. His next target was the Mamluk Sultanate, guardian of Mecca and Medina and one of the most prestigious powers in the Islamic world. This episode follows the escalating rivalry from Selim’s occupation of Tabriz and the Ottoman army’s mutiny to the annexation of the Dulkadirid buffer state and the diplomatic crisis that gave Selim his pretext for war. As Ottoman and Mamluk armies converged on northern Syria, bribery, poor finances, and divided loyalties had already begun weakening Sultan Qansuh al-Ghawri from within. At Marj Dabiq, roughly 60,000 Ottomans faced a larger Mamluk host. Elite cavalry repeatedly attacked, but Ottoman cannons, Janissary firearms, and coordinated battlefield tactics steadily tore open the Mamluk lines. Then Hayir Bey’s withdrawal and false report of encirclement triggered panic. By sunset, the Mamluk army had collapsed, its sultan was dead, and Syria lay exposed.
