Since the days of the apostles, synods have been used to aid in the governance of the Church, as well as to articulate particular disciplines and doctrines. This two-part series on the history of synodality in the Church will examine both the use and misuse of synods, how they are distinct from Ecumenical Councils, and how to interpret the ongoing "Synod on Synodality" in the broader context of Church history.

Fr. Eric Bergman is a Catholic priest of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter. He serves in Scranton, PA as the pastor of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, a parish of converts to Catholicism who celebrate the Anglican Use of the Roman Rite Mass. A former clergyman of the Episcopal Church and a convert to Catholicism, Fr. Bergman was ordained to the priesthood in 2007. Fr. Bergman serves as Chaplain of the Anglicanorum Coetibus Society, a Catholic organization dedicated to increasing awareness of the 2009 Apostolic Constitution of Pope Benedict XVI, Anglicanorum Coetibus. His articles have been published in Anglican Embers, This Rock, and Catholic Men’s Quarterly, and he has spoken across the United States. He and his wife, Kristina, reside in Scranton and have ten children.
