Orpheus (1950) is the rarest of the rare, a film made for art's sake. Directed by Jean Cocteau, it offers evocative photography and a uniquely absurd tone. Nevertheless, for me what makes it most interesting perhaps is that it is very self-indulgent, that it knows it self-indulgent, and that it uses that self-indulgence as a core theme. Oh, meta!
