Anyone who's used soap, shampoo, or detergent has seen the power of surfactants—those magic molecules that dissolve grease, remove stains, and create those satisfying suds.

But surfactants can also irritate the eyes.

So, how can cleaning products be made effective without causing irritation?

Researchers from Procter and Gamble used ORNL’s Summit supercomputer to study how surfactants interact with the corneal membrane.

They simulated the molecular behavior of surfactants in real-time—down to the microsecond—to understand which compounds cause irritation.

The result? By simulating surfactant interactions, the team uncovered new ways to increase product concentration without increasing irritation. ✨
