An ORNL research team created a novel advanced microscopy tool, called a synthescope, to “write” with atoms, placing those atoms exactly where they are needed to give a material new properties. This unique tool gives scientists the ability to fabricate materials atom-by-atom, opening the door to a new way to address critical needs in quantum computing and communication.
