Chris found an original 1820's ladies cap - here he reveals the construction details for you.

It does not need all that much by way of fabric or lace, but if you fancy having a go yourself at making one, it will need a great deal of time. I would suggest the following sequence

1. Assemble the flat panels over the front - the wider one being ruched
2. Ruche and gather the bobbles ensuring they are all even
3. join the bobbles together with the tapes
4. attach the bobbles to the crown
5. sew the edge lace to the frill and gather.
6. attach the frill to the assembled cap, building a channel for the drawstrings all round the seam.

Can anyone tell me the correct dressmaking term for the "bobbles"???
Does anyone know whether the bobbles would originally have been stuffed to fill them out? Contemporary illustrations are unclear.
