Many pieces of optomechanics feature mounting slots, allowing multiple mounting points for more flexibility in the mounting position. However, the aluminum slot surface can be permanently deformed if a cap screw is used. Placing a washer between the slot and cap screw, with the curved, shiny side against the slot, prevents this deformation and better preserves the optomech’s surface. It is always best practice to use a washer when mounting a slotted piece of optomech with cap screws.
