In August 2022, the Llandilo Brigade embarked on ‘Operation Sunshine’ for 10-year-old Nicola, who had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour, and her family. Nearly 30 volunteers and more than a dozen family members attended the station for a memorable night, with a range of activities for Nicola and her younger brother Noah. Nicola, who had all the makings of an excellent firefighter, was named honorary Captain of the brigade in Sydney’s west.

Since then, the crew have gone above and beyond their duties as volunteers by offering ongoing support to the Smith family, including offers to make meals, buy groceries and mow the family’s lawn, all so they could spend more time with Nicola.

Held on the fourth of May, St Florian’s Day is the International Day of Firefighters. To mark the occasion each year, the RFS takes the opportunity to recognise its members’ acts of bravery and outstanding service. This year, the Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade was awarded the Commissioner’s Certificate of Commendation (Unit) for their generosity of spirit and compassion.

You can find all the details of our worthy recipients on the RFS website.
