OPERATION ADVENTURE UTAH is a new outdoor exploration program that connects urban middle school students to their public lands through recreation, interpretation, and endurance activities! In summer 2018, a group of 8th grade students kicked off their summer vacation in sunny Moab, UT, with a week of camping, hiking, river rafting, paddle boarding, and team games.
The Operation Adventure program began 50 years ago in Minnesota, as a summer school program where students explored local geography, geology, history and biology. Packed with physical activities like swimming, canoeing, hiking, camping and physical fitness, students could receive high school credit for either physical education, science, and social studies.
The BLM-Utah hopes to continue Operation Adventure Utah in partnership with the Salt Lake City School District and offer the recreation camps on an annual basis. Eventually, Operation Adventure Utah plans expand into a student exchange program, where qualifying youth can experience recreation and learning activities in both Utah and Minnesota. Thanks to our awesome partners at Clayton Middle School, Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks, and Canyonlands Field Institute for an unforgettable adventure on Utah’s public lands!
