When you return Richard to the lady, she sets a flag that makes him disappear for the rest of the night. This flag is in the part of the save context which doesn't get overwritten when you change save files. As long as you don't let it turn from night to day, and don't reset the game, Richard will stay gone, even across different save files. In OoT64, you should be able to do this with a death and don't continue. Useless except maybe for randomizer players to know to avoid doing this by accident.
