Consider this level a tutorial showing off the shadow, an enemy that has a lot of utility in "Mazes and Labyrinths". Somewhat similar to goriyas in "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past", their movement is mapped to your controls. What's different is that they can also interact with most the same mechanisms as the player, allowing you to use the shadow to hit switches or pressure plates or otherwise open paths that would otherwise be inaccessible to you.
They're a very complex enemy that allow for a lot of complex puzzles. This level is just a taste of what they can do.
