Modern woodworking isn’t just woodworking anymore.
What started as a simple idea — a 66-inch hidden power table for The Collaboratory — quickly turned into one of the most complicated builds we’ve tackled yet.
This single project pulled together five different disciplines:
• Traditional woodworking
• Large-scale panel glue-ups
• CNC machining
• Custom inlay work
• Metallic epoxy finishing
And every one of them fought back.
From milling challenges and domino alignment problems to CNC calibration mistakes, failed inlays, epoxy pivots, and design changes on the fly, this build became a real-world lesson in how quickly modern maker projects can spiral when multiple systems collide.
But that’s also what makes building exciting.
Because sometimes the project you planned isn’t the project you finish with.
