One of the most surprising word histories I teach my students is this:
gauze, the medical fabric used to dress wounds,comes from Gaza.
For centuries, Gaza was known for producing a very fine cotton textile that was traded across the region and Europe. Over time, the name of the place became the name of the material.

Today, the connection feels painfully ironic.
The city historically linked to this life-saving material is currently facing severe shortages of basic medical supplies.
Sometimes language carries pieces of history we don’t expect.
