The Apostle Paul shares a profound understanding of unity in Christ in the third chapter of his letter to the Galatians: “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ,” he says. And now, among them “There is no longer Jew or Greek; there is no longer slave or free; there is no longer male and female, for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” This is a beautiful formulation of the Enduring Principle of Unity in Diversity. Being one in Christ does not mean tyranny or conformity. Rather, we understand the Body of Christ to be strengthened by the diverse gifts and inheritance each individual brings. Nevertheless, just as the church in Paul’s time did not always live up to this principle and faced internal factionalism, so too our denomination today has work to do to truly embody the principles we profess.
