What happens when people from different cultures become one community that truly expresses and celebrates the unique gifts each person has to offer? What if diversity was never a problem to overcome, but part of God’s original vision?
The second chapter of the Book of Acts tells the story of the Holy Spirit descending on the early Christian community in Jerusalem, fifty days after Jesus’ resurrection on the first Easter. Though these disciples came from different cultures and spoke different languages, they became one in the Spirit — illustrating the Enduring Principle of Unity in Diversity. God’s new covenant was not made with any one people, but with all peoples. When the disciples were commissioned to share the good news, they did not only do so in the language that Jesus spoke (Aramaic); they translated the gospel into all languages. Beyond the Walls is a sacred community that embodies the diversity of the Pentecost story, on a global scale today, in the 21st century.
