A few verses from “One Hundred Years Hence,” a song penned in 1852, with the lyrics by a woman named Frances D. Gage. The lyrics of this song feel incredibly progressive to have been written over 175 years ago. One verse, not sung here, includes the lines, “Then woman, man's partner, man's equal will stand.” The song also calls for an end to slavery and for prisons to be converted into schools.
I came across this song through an amazing album, “The Liberated Woman’s Song Book” by contemporary artist Dawn Landes, who I believe changed a few of the original lyrics, but not by much.
In times like this, it’s hard to feel hopeful. And simultaneously, we must have visions for a different culture to even begin to enact change. Where are we going? What do you want to see? What lyrics would you put into this song?
Lyrics
In 100 years what a change will be made
In politics, morals, religion and trade
In leaders who teeter and tiptoe the line
All will be changed in 100 years time
Instead of grandstanding to satisfy wrong
We’ll join in the chorus and sing freedom’s song
Convention will then be a dull exercise
Our votes will all count in 100 year’s time
