ONE HONEST HOUR
100 Million Graves. And America Just Made It a Brand.
In Cambodia, they killed you for wearing glasses.
Glasses meant you read. Reading meant you thought. Thinking meant you might ask the one question the system couldn't survive: where did the food go?
So they shot the readers first. A quarter of a nation, dead in four years, so no one would stand above anyone else. They achieved the equality. It was the equality of the grave.
Stalin starved millions in the richest farmland in Europe. Mao broke his record. Total the century and serious historians land at one hundred million human beings. Not from war. From an idea โ implemented sincerely, by people who promised fairness.
That idea has a name, and I use it, because the people selling it have learned not to. Communism. And its patient younger brother, socialism โ same promise, same arithmetic, just slower reaching for your property.
It is the most lethal idea in the history of our species.
And right now it is the fastest-growing brand in American politics.
It governs the largest city in the country. Last week its mayor answered a 110-degree heat wave by telling eight million people to set their thermostats to 78. Its candidates just swept New York's primaries and are headed to Congress in seats their party does not lose. One of them went on national television to clarify she's not a communist โ merely a democratic socialist โ and expected you to find that reassuring.
Sixty years ago, a hundred million corpses made that word unspeakable in American politics. One generation of forgetting made it a clarification.
Here is the part nobody says out loud: this idea has never once survived scrutiny. Two hundred years. A hundred launches. Zero graceful exits. It persists by a single trick โ it is graded on its intentions, forever, and never asked to defend its record.
So I stopped being polite and gave it the interrogation. Marx, who never built anything. Norway, the alibi that secretly keeps its two trillion dollars in American companies. Washington, which spends $1.35 for every dollar it takes. New York, the rehearsal city. And the foreign money โ billions of it โ buying the universities that teach your kids what to think.
It has never survived one honest hour. So give it the hour. At your dinner table. In public. Under your own name.
