At the tender age of 13, Ondrej Nepela made his senior international debut at the Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria, finishing 22nd. It was the beginning of a 9-year amateur career that would culminate in 8 national, 5 European, 3 World titles, and the 1972 Olympic gold medal.
When he retired in 1973, the new artistic age in men's skating was dawning with his contemporaries John Curry and Toller Cranston. Back in 1964, the sport looked very different.
