"Ninety-eight musicians performed an AIDS benefit concert today to honour the lead singer of the group 'Queen.' At the end, Liza Minnelli led a rendition of the Queen song, 'We Are the Champions.' Mercury died of AIDS last year. Some 70,000 fans filled the stands during the four-and-a-half-hour show."

"More than 100 performers and 72,000 rock fans filled Wembley Stadium in London Monday for a concert in honor of the late Freddie Mercury. Mercury, the lead singer of the rock group 'Queen,' died of AIDS last November at 45 years of age. Many members of the audience carried red banners bearing the singer's name, while musicians wore red ribbons, which have come to symbolize support for AIDS awareness. More than 100,000 ribbons were handed out. Performers ran the gamut from heavy metal groups to pop stars such as Elton John and David Bowie, and AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor even joined in."
