"Jesse" fled to Rwanda from his home in neighboring Uganda after facing government persecution for working with the LGBT community. In Uganda, people accused of homosexual acts can be imprisoned for life, and allies face similar risks. Persecution of the LGBT community and homosexual acts only started in much of sub-Saharan Africa under European colonial rule, with the laws remaining in place even after independence. In many pre-colonial societies, including Uganda, homosexuality was widely accepted and even practiced by kings.
