Another great reel of film from the National Archives, this time of ships on the Great Lakes some time in the 1930's or 40's.
0:12 The first series of shots shows the steam tugboat GREEN BAY, which at the time was owned by the C. Reiss Coal Company of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Built in 1912 as the GARY, she was re-engined in 1957 with diesel power, then sold and renamed several times after that. Now known as the GROUPER, she is, remarkably, still afloat, tied up in Lyons New York on the Erie Canal. 0:48 A series of shots of coal and ore unloading. At least one of the shots of Hulett Unloaders was taken at Conneaut, Ohio, but I haven't been able to identify where the others were taken.
1:57 A series of shots of the lake freighter FAYETTE BROWN. Built as the CHARLES L. HUTCHINSON in 1910, it was renamed in 1917. On the way to being scrapped in 1964, it was cut adrift in a storm and wrecked on Anicosti Island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

3:54 Daylight now as we see freighters come and go out of Duluth from the lift bridge.
The music, from Leo Sowerby's FROM THE NORTHLAND (1922), is particularly appropriate here. It was inspired by a trip he took around Lake Superior.
