Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon sits down with University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Chancellor Donde Plowman to discuss what leadership has looked like over the course of her life, from serving as captain of her high school and college tennis teams to her current role.
With experience in state and federal government, Kincannon says serving in local government is her favorite because it’s so personal. There’s more than one way to lead, she says, and her advice to others is to be authentic and true to their own leadership styles while seeking insights from one another.
Kincannon and Plowman discuss the ways they’ve worked together over the years, including throwing a parade through downtown Knoxville just days after the Volunteers won the 2024 Men’s College World Series. The Vols unite Knoxville, Kincannon says, and have inspired more investment and beauty in the city.
