“UT has sparked my passion for storytelling,” says Jewel Spear, a guard for Lady Vols basketball. “I'm always surrounded by other athletes at this school, and being able to hear their stories and listen to them has opened my eyes to the different experiences that we have.”
Spear aspires to play professionally in the WNBA and later pursue a career in sports broadcasting. She credits her faculty mentor, Associate Professor Guy Harrison in the School of Journalism and Media, with helping her gain the confidence to follow her broadcasting ambitions. Together, they created a talk show called Transfers Talk Tennessee Sports which allowed Spear to practice her craft.
“Dr. Harrison has helped me become more comfortable in front of and behind the camera,” Spear says. “After each week in class I became more confident, and I really enjoy doing what I do.”
It takes connection to thrive.
