This is a story about a boy named Travis who lives in rural Texas with his father, mother, and younger brother, Arliss. His father takes a job steering cattle in Kansas and so Travis is given the responsibility to watch over his family and the home.
One day, Travis discovers a stray dog eating the family’s meat and they decide to keep the dog, naming him Old Yeller. Arliss traps a bear cub and just as the mother bear is about to attack Arliss, Old Yeller saves Arliss.
Travis and the family is visited by a man named Bud and his granddaughter named Lisbeth. Lisbeth tells Travis that her dog is pregnant with Old Yeller's puppies.
Old Yeller’s owner visits Travis and the family. The owner takes Old Yeller away, but then decides to let Arliss have him. However, the man warns Travis that there has been an outbreak of rabies and that he should shoot any animal that begins to show unusual signs.
Old Yeller helps Travis with marking the wild hogs, a dangerous job that requires strategy and coordination. However, during a hog marking, Travis gets tusked in the leg and Old Yeller gets hurt pretty bad.
Travis leaves Old Yeller in the wild and limps home, where his mother cleans his wounds. Later, the family returns to the countryside to save Old Yeller and brings him home.
Bud and Lisbeth return and Bud decides that Lisbeth should stay and help the family until Travis recovers from his leg injury. Lisbeth also gives Arliss a puppy.
Because a couple of cows begin acting strange and show signs of rabies, Travis shoots them.
When Travis’ mother and Lisbeth go out into the woods, they are attacked by a lone wolf with rabies. Old Yeller is there to protect them, but he gets bitten by the wolf.
Because the family can’t take any chances that Old Yeller might have rabies, Travis is forced to shoot Old Yeller.
In the end, Travis’ father returns and Travis takes Arliss and the new pup hunting.
