Portions of a bridge that spans the Stillwater River in Old Town collapsed this afternoon while work was underway according to local police and a Department of Transportation spokesman.
Photos and videos posted to social media show parts of the bridge dangling into the Stillwater river. Crews were pouring concrete for the bridge deck at the time.
Maine DOT said no motorists or construction workers were injured and the incident remains under investigation.
The new bridge under construction spans the Stillwater River roughly 2.5 miles north of Orono. A temporary bridge built just beside the new span carries traffic along Stillwater Avenue, which is a thoroughfare between Old Town, Orono and Bangor. The temporary bridge was closed to traffic immediately after the collapse but had reopened before 4 p.m.
The collapse occurred in one section of the bridge. The middle of the section gave out, collapsing in a V-shape with the support girders landing in the Stillwater River. The web of rebar that would have helped to support the road surface was clearly visible, as were tools and heavy equipment.
Several members of the construction crew working on the project gathered in a nearby parking area declined to comment on the incident.
