Challenge Ratings solve a problem that B/X and a lot of OSR play were never built around. Old D&D did not expect every encounter to be balanced to the party. Instead, it relied on telegraphed danger, reaction rolls, morale, retreat, and player choice.

This video breaks down the practical referee tool that replaces encounter balance: don’t balance the monster, balance the information. I walk through how to place threats honestly, how to signal danger before initiative starts, and how to keep unbalanced encounters fair instead of random.
