🚙 Drive America’s Highways for approximately 28 miles west along Oklahoma Route 66 from Oklahoma City to El Reno, Oklahoma — a classic urban-to-plains segment rich with Mother Road landmarks.

This drive follows one of the most recognizable and historically intact portions of Route 66 in the state, beginning near Oklahoma City at its junction with Interstate 44. Leaving the city behind, the route quickly transitions from urban frontage roads and commercial corridors into a more open, small-town rhythm that defines much of western Oklahoma’s Route 66 experience. The alignment closely parallels modern interstate infrastructure, yet retains the character, scale, and roadside spacing of the original highway.

As the route heads west, it passes through long-established communities such as Yukon, where classic service stations, vintage signage, and low-rise commercial strips still line the roadway. This stretch highlights how Route 66 functioned as a primary business artery long before interstates redirected long-distance traffic. The road itself remains mostly straight and easy to follow, making it well-suited for relaxed driving and uninterrupted forward views. Surrounding scenery gradually opens up, with fewer buildings, wider skies, and subtle changes in land use that hint at the agricultural plains beyond the metro area.

This footage was recorded in 2018, and the corridor has seen notable changes since that time. Most significantly, the junction with U.S. Route 81 in southeast El Reno has been substantially reworked, including the addition of a modern roundabout that altered traffic flow at one of the key historic intersections along this alignment. These upgrades reflect ongoing efforts to balance safety and traffic efficiency while preserving the functional role of Oklahoma Route 66 within the regional roadway network. As a result, present-day drivers will encounter a noticeably different configuration near the eastern approach to El Reno compared to what is shown in this video.

Approaching El Reno, the highway maintains its historic identity while integrating into modern traffic patterns. The drive concludes near the junction with Interstate 40, a symbolic handoff between eras of American road travel. This segment of Oklahoma Route 66 captures a clean, representative slice of the Mother Road: not overly scenic, not overly commercial, but grounded in everyday history. It reflects how Route 66 connected cities, supported towns, and quietly shaped travel across the Great Plains for generations.
