Boeing 727 2S2F(RE), G-OSRB, owned by T2 Aviation Ltd and operated by 2 Excel Aviation Ltd, as a chemical dispersal spray aircraft for 'Oil Spill Response', does a flypast as part of Sywell Airshow 2024.
The two 727 aircraft in the fleet are currently based at London Southend Airport, Essex, UK and can deploy to anywhere in the world on 24 hour year round availability. In the event of a large oil spill on water requiring chemical dispersal spray, the aircraft, which is one of two in the fleet, can be deployed within 6 hours of a call.
The aircraft has the world's first jet based aerial chemical dispersion system able to safely pump flammable chemical dispersant liquids, called TERSUS. Inside the fuselage are seven interconnected tanks, each with a capacity of 2,200 litres, giving a total of 15,400 litres. A powerful pumping system can deliver between 500 and 1,200 litres per minute from specially designed boom spray arms that can be seen fitted below the fuselage rear. The boom can be removed for long transits and refitted on arrival, to improve range and speed of the aircraft. All of the filling and spraying is controlled remotely by the aircraft and flight engineers using designated control panels fitted within the cockpit. A big advantage of this type of aircraft is its ability to fly high, fast and economically compared to other aircraft that have previously been used.
Only one type of chemical dispersant is held at the aircraft's home base, but the system can use eight other approved chemical types depending on customer requirements.
When spraying the aircraft will fly at 150 knots, 150 feet above the waters surface, preferably accompanied by a lighter spotter aircraft above it to guide the optimum spraying location and pattern. The aircraft can fly up to three sorties daily.
Plans were announced during May 2025 to replace both Boeing 727s with a pair of Boeing 737-800s in about 2028.
