The Tiger Club's Turbulent Display team, with 3 little Rollason Druine D.31 Turbulent aircraft, displaying at The Imperial War Museum, Dux ford during their VE Day Flying Day on 10 May 2025. As you can see, weather for the display was sunny with good visibility, but there was a southerly cross wind with gusts directly across the runway and display line into the crowd. This meant that the display line was pushed further south away from the crowd line than it would otherwise have been and presumably made for some difficult and interesting flying for such small and light aircraft.
The Tiger Club’s Turbulent Display Team is one of the longest-established flying display teams in the world. Since 1959, the Turbs have been an integral part of the Tiger Club’s famously colourful contribution to light aviation, during which time the team has brought the excitement of its energetic and flamboyant low-level displays to audiences at hundreds of airshows and events at home and abroad.
The Druine D.31 Turbulent is a French single-seat ultralight Homebuilt aircraft designed by Roger Druine, to be amateur-built. It's a single-seat ultra-light aircraft with cantilever low-wing and fixed tailwheel landing gear. Designed to be powered by a 30hp (1200cc) Volkswagen or similar engine. The fuselage and wings use wood construction with fabric covering.
Rollason Aircraft & Engines Limited produced 26 factory-built D.31 aircraft in the United Kingdom and three D.31A models with strengthened wing spar in order to get a full British certificate of Airworthiness. Five Turbulents are currently operated by the Tiger Club.
The rights to plans for the design are held by the UK Light Aircraft Association.
